The event we have all been waiting for. The night when all our favorite stars showcase their fashion styles. The red carpet where designers prove their creativity and show off their latest designs. The Met Gala, also known as the Met Ball: a fundraising event for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. This year, we’ve come to the 47th edition of this spectacular event, the opening act of the annual fashion exhibition of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

A special theme is chosen for each edition of the gala, which gives the dress code for the night. This thematic frame is a challenge for both stars and designers fighting for the spotlight and the Best Dressed title. The Theme of 2017 is called Art of the In-Between and the exhibition features the creations of the Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo, founder of the Comme des Garçons fashion label. Her artistic vision has had a huge influence on the fashion world and the Comme des Garçons ensembles are the reflection of her subtle, but impactful artistic sense. Bold, avant-garde and theatrical. Just a few adjectives to describe her style. The Vogue-sponsored event has chosen her collections for their spring exhibition because of her unique artistic visions on clothes: What are clothes anyway?

Museum curator Andrew Bolton will deliver an interpretation of Kawakubo’s art, dividing the exhibition in 8 aesthetic expressions of interstitiality: Fashion/Anti-Fashion, Design/Not Design, Model/Multiple, Then/Now, High/Low, Self/Other, Object/Subject, and Clothes/Not Clothes. The word interstitial means “between spaces: therefore the name of the exhibition: Art of the in-between. The gowns and outfits of the night have either paid a tribute to the art of the Japanese designer or have been designed according to the 8 dualisms, which have served as guidelines. Once again does this night become a catwalk of art. This event is the equivalent of Oscars for innovation, creativity and uniqueness in fashion. It doesn’t fail to deliver new visions and fashion pieces, genius creators, a special setting and an artistic flair: the perfect combination.

As for the details of the gowns, I am not going to tell stories about them, but let the pictures speak for themselves.

Let’s begin with the designs of Carolina Herrera and her interpretation of the theme.

Model Taylor Hill’s wore a burgundy mermaid-like gown created by Herrera. Actress and Songwriter Emmy Rossum arrived in a black & white asymmetrical one-piece by Carolina Herrera. Top Model Karlie Kloss hit the red carpet in an elegant business look: a tuxedo dress with shirt-inspired sleeves. Model Hailey Baldwin combines the bride look and the ballerina tutu in her gown for the Met Gala.

Alberta Ferretti dresses have been chosen by two famous top models and style icons: Adriana Lima and Fei Fei Sun.

They both wore all black and elegant dresses. Adriana Lima’s halter dress is the perfect combination of elegance and poise. Fei Fei chose a classic version of the black dress made of velvet with a tint of modernity: sleeves inspired from the style of Rei Kawakubo, the star designer of the night.

Topshop and H&M also made their appearance on the red carpet represented by Model Candice Swanepoel and Stella Maxwell. Two elegant gowns with royal elements such as pearls (H&M) or the princess silhouette (Top Shop). Again the contrast bright and dark.

Chanel designs were presented by Cara Delavingne and Lily Rose Depp. While Cara is wearing a sparkly silver pantsuit and rocking her bold hairstyle, Lily is pretty in pink wearing a long elegant gown with flower applications.

Catwalk legend Naomi Campbell walks on the red carpet in a black, elegant, velvet gown with silver applications by Azzedine Alaïa.

Miranda Cher is stunning in a mid length polka dots patterned Oscar De La Renta dress. Elle Fanning walks as an ice princess in Miu Miu.

Fashion Editor Alexa Chung and Emma Roberts both chose to appear in Diane von Furstenberg gowns on the red carpet. Alexa Chung went for the polka dots, while Emma opted for a red movie star gown.

The Jenners bring sparkle on the red carpet. Kylie Jenner walks in a transparent Versace gown with crystals applications. Kendall Jenner shows her La Perla Couture revealing gown off: a bodysuit covered with delicate net of crystals.

Laura Osnes arrives in Christian Siriano’s gown with rose motives. Selena Gomez is wearing an ethno Couch gown with flower applications and hand sewed details. Rihanna is the model of a bold and colorful gown by Rei Kawakubo at the Met Gala 2017.

Truly a night full of fashion culture and talent. To answer Rei’s question : This is what clothes are. The outcome of creativity. See you next year!
